Are you still in high school and looking for major exams to be written in Nigeria to get admission to higher education? In this article, I will show you some great tests for high school students. These are the tests that will prepare you for the university of your choice. I have given myself time to choose the most suitable among the few and touch on the essential things you need to know. For example, the date of registration and other necessary information. Let's start with ...
WASSCE
This is the ultimate test after a student attends a secondary school in West Africa. The examinations are organized by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). It tests how well a child has learned after six years of secondary school. Upon completion of the examination, the candidate will be issued a certificate of completion. This will be awarded by the local school where the student is studying.
How Long Does the WAEC Result Last
The WAEC result lasts a lifetime. It is a highly respected result. Institutions of higher learning look at the result more than any other result released by any other examination body in Nigeria.
NECO
The National Examination Council is also an exam organization that allows students to take part in graduation tests. This council provides the same service as WAEC but is not considered to be better than WAEC. Like the WAEC results, the NECO results are lifelong.
UTME
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) is a test organized by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB). It is a test written by students in Nigeria to gain admission to tertiary institutions. It is done every year.
With UTME results, a student can get admission to any higher institution of his or her choice. Your grade (ie. UTME score) determines where you will study.
What is JAMB cut-off mark for University?
JAMB has made every effort to force Universities to admit students who score 180 points or more in the exams. Consequently, any student who scores less than 180 points will be considered for Polytechnics or Colleges of Education. However, admission to universities in various disciplines depends on the grade as well. Competitively, a candidate may need to earn more than 270 points to be considered for admission to other ivy League universities in Nigeria.
How many subjects are being tested at JAMB?
JAMB assesses its students in 4 subjects, including English and any other 3 subjects as the institution of choice. Each subject has 100 marks, a summary of up to 400.
How long does the JAMB result last?
JAMB result lasts 1 year. The candidate is expected to be approved in the year or year following which the exam is written. Failure to obtain the admission the same year means that the candidate will have to re-sit the exams.
GCE
The General Examination for Certificate is a supplement to WAEC and NECO. This test was originally intended to provide an opportunity for a category of employees who want to continue their studies but have a shortage of one or two courses. Independent students also want to have an educational certificate from WAEC but do not have the luxury of time to spend in the four walls of the classroom.
Can Secondary School students write GCE?
The answer to this question is YES. High school students can write this test as it does not conflict with any other major school activities. As mentioned earlier, the test is for people who do not have time to sit in class. However, high school students have also benefited from the test.
Can I write GCE, WAEC, and NECO on SS1 or SS2?
Yes, you may notice that some schools are already taking strong action against students who write GCE while on SS1 or SS2. Passing the GCE before reaching SS3 in the past creates tensions between school owners and parents. With this, schools have started implementing the policy of prohibiting high school students from writing GCE while in SS1 or SS2.
Is the GCE result expiring?
No! Like WAEC and NECO, the GCE result is also a lifetime result and can be used for the same purpose as WAEC and NECO. It is more widely used than NECO as it is organized by WAEC.
How much is a GCE form?
The GCE WAEC form price from 2021/2022 was N18950. For both registration and biometric, we charged N22,000. The price of 2023 GCE WAEC is thought to be in the Nxxxxx range. Not yet known.
